CHAPTER ELEVEN
Diesel
Long before I stepped into a boxing ring, I knew fighting was something I was good at. Thanks to my dad, who taught Dray and me how to use our hands and legs to choke someone to death. How to snap someoneâs neck correctly to sever their spinal cord, cutting off all brain activity and stopping the heart instantly or depending on the crime leading to their punishment, leaving them a trauma victim for life.
Heâd have us hitting punching bags, strike pads, going at each other, and once we were old enough to go toe to toe with him, he came at us hard, and we came back just as hard, if not harder.
Mom used to get angry as all hell when weâd come in with dried blood on our knuckles, bruises on different parts of our bodies from sparring with one another. The woman, at times, could be more protective than anyone I ever met. It didnât matter what age we were. You didnât fuck with Deidre Hughesâs babies.
Dad would always laugh, telling her the only way we would learn was to feel what it was like to take punches and what good would his hard work. Her showing us the meaning of protecting someone you love, even if at the time she was going overboard if we went down like a pussy the first time someone wanted to draw our blood.
Thereâs money to be made in fighting too. In the years Iâd been taking my cut for putting matches together for the empire, Amber and I made more than we could spend in a lifetime.
Hand over fist.
People love to throw their money down the drain just to watch two men beat the ever-loving shit out of each other. Screaming and chanting and hollering in excitement at the sight of blood. Fists pumping in the air when the one they bet on knocks their opponent out. We all took punches to get the crowd roaring. Landed more, threw more, missed more to get them off their feet, to give them their moneyâs worth.
Itâs a thrill like no other.
Over the years, fighting never became just a hobby to me. Itâs a way for me to release tension, a way to fuck someone up without killing them. However, there have been times when Iâd step into a ring to say fuck the rules and kill him.
That wasnât me. I didnât ruin a string of peopleâs lives for no reason, and I sure as shit wouldnât fuck up the good life of my blood unless they deserved it.
Anger spools tighter inside my chest. Coiling itself around the extreme hate for Andre. Heâs the backbone to all of this messed-up bullshit.
Hope heâs shitting his goddamn pants watching our men tear his home apart. Guarantee there wonât be a trace of evidence to be found. He destroyed it all before he came to my house.
Iâd bet my life on it.
This whole fuckery of a situation, if thatâs even what to call it, makes a real man like me want to throw the fuck up.
